Hermitage of the Virgen de la Vega

It is a small shrine placed in the Corneja Valley, about 3 or 4 kilometres from Piedrahita, and to which one can be access from the village through two main routes. Firstly by the road between Piedrahita and Salamanca (C-510) from which we have to deviate slightly to the right, and secondly by the so-called Old Road linking the hermitage to Piedrahita.

The chapel houses the Virgen de la Vega, Patroness of the Corneja Valley and is the setting for traditional festivals of the Valley, which take place in its esplanade each year to celebrate the pilgrimage in honor of its patroness, the first Monday after Pentecost. On Saturday night before the second Sunday in September as the beginning of the festivities, the image of the virgin is led in procession to the village of Piedrahita, where it will remain until the last Sunday in October, when it is returned by the people in procession to the hermitage.

Moreover, in the area that occupies the chapel we can also find the Casa del Santero and a small bullfighting place of square morphology. Under all this set it has been detected that the first phase of occupation of the site dates from the Roman period, and thanks to archaeological works, it has detected the presence of a late-Roman villa belonging to a wealthy person from that time. In these early archaeological works, published in 1927, numerous materials were found among which remains of Roman mosaics stand out.

It is known that from the seventeenth century in the hermitage various reconstruction, remodeling and renovation works have taken place. Among them, those originated due to the War of Independence in the nineteenth century and which gave rise to the present tower that has the building and that was built in the twentieth century.
